An increasing number of companies are offering their customers the option to mitigate the impact of their purchase or behavior in voluntary offsetting schemes. Little is still known on what drives consumers to contribute to these programs, nor about the role of transparency, nor how such programs affect future consumer behavior. We investigate these questions in a randomized controlled field trial in collaboration with the Dutch utility company PWN.
